What does it mean to refer a 20-in television set or a 25-in TV? Such units refer to the diagonal of the screen. A 20-in set also has a width of 16 inches. What is the height?

If 20" is the diagonal and the screen is rectangular, as they all are these days, the height is
sqrt[(20)^2 - (16)^2] = sqrt (144) = 12 inches
The followng has nothing to do with algebra but might interest you anyway:
The 4:3 width/height ratio of this TV example has been replaced by 16:9 ratio flat screen TVs that are more suitable for the format of most movies and sports broadcasts these days
