step #1 in any limit question is to simply sub in your approach value.
If you get a real number answer, that's it, that's your answer, you are done!

lim ( (√(y^2 + 8) - 3)/(y+3) , y -->-1
= ( √9 - 3)/2
= 0/2
= 0
