Which ionic compound is expected to form from combining the following pairs of elements? yttrium and oxygen

YO won't do it.
Y is in group III(or group 3 depending upon the system your prof is using); therefore, I expect its most prominent valence to be +3. Oxygen is -2; therefore, I would think to look at Y2O3 for the oxide.
