pay bills. He spent 30% of what was left on new clothes, and going out to eat. while he was out, he gave $20 to a salvation army charity santa on the street corner. He put 3/4 of what was left into savings. He lent his friend $15 and had $85 left. How much did he start with?

What you have to do is work backwards from $85 dollars and add the amounts he spent to get $1214.
