Don't listen to "Jman". Marijuana has many medical and non-medical purposes, of which is to treat cancer, ease pain, and destress. The cons are that it is considered a "gateway drug" because someday it won't work anymore and you'll start doing worse things.
And the Government would lose LOTS of money if it was legal, that's another reason why it's mainly not.

How would the government lose money if marijuana were legal? Wouldn't they tax it heavily as it has cigarettes?

What about the money governments spend prosecuting and incarcerating marijuana possessors and sales people?
