Why is it that if deceleration is doubled, distance is halved?

Stopping distance = (avg. velocity)*(time)
= (avg. velocity)*(max. velocity)/(deceleration rate)
= (1/2)(max. velocity)^2/(deceleration rate)

They are inversely related.
