6a = 2
a = ?
add like terms on same sides
7a - 4 + 2a --> 7a+2a = 9a
equals
9a - 4 = 3a - 2
combine like terms from opposite sides by adding or subtracting on both sides

9a - 4 + 4 = 3a - 2 + 4
equals
9a = 3a + 2
9a - 3a = 3a - 3a + 2
equals
6a = 2

then divide out the last number to get "a" by itself

6a/6 = 2/6
a = 2/6 --> 1/3
