apparently there are 3 boys for every 2 girls
given 12 boys, that makes 3*4 boys
so, there are 2*4 = 8 girls
surely the problem was not expressed in such vague and inaccurate language. Why not just copy it as it was written?

There were 12 boys and 18 girls in a class. Then, 3 more boys joined
the class and 2 girls left. What is the ratio of the number of boys to
the number of girls in the class now?
