if he paid p for the bike,
p/2 + 988 = p + 300
p/2 = 688
p = 1376
so, he sold it for 1376/2 + 988 = 1676
1676 - 1376 = 300
p/2 + 988 = p + 300
p/2 = 688
p = 1376
so, he sold it for 1376/2 + 988 = 1676
1676 - 1376 = 300

let purchase price be x
selling price = (1/2)x + 988
(1/2)x + 988 - x = 300
(-1/2)x = -688
x = 1376
bought at 1376 , sold at 1676
check:
is (1/2)1376 + 988 = 1676 ? , YES!
