BY 1867, life in the south had changed dramatically. African Americans were free to work for themeselves, to vote, and to run for office.

The Task of Rebuilding

Despite political problems, Reconstruction governments tried to rebuild the South. They built public schools for both black and white children. Many states gave women the right to own property. In addition, Recontruction governments rebuilt railroads, telegraph lines, bridges, and roads. Between 1865 and 1879, the South put down 7,000 miles od railroad track.
