                Is latitude the up and down lines on a map?Or the side to side lines?

    Wouldn't it depend on how you hung your map?  If N is up, then latitudes are the lines parallel to the equator..horizontal.

    Latitudes are the west-to-east lines.  
One way to remember the difference is that longitude goes the long way -- up and down.
