A stream has jumped its banks and is starting to flow through a formerly dry prairie. Trees are beginning to take root near the riverbed and are starting to develop a canopy. Explain what you believe will happen to the native grass that has flourished in this spot up until now, and why.

Grasses need sunlight in order to grow. When trees form a canopy, the sun is shut out and the grasses die out.
