Michelle, all the great European empires were involved in WWI, and WWI saw the end of most of the great world empires (monarchies). Following WWI, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire was gone, the great tsarist Russian empire was gone. At the end of WWI, smaller states started becoming more powerful--America was not considered a world player prior to WWI, but became an empire following the war. The German empire gained more footing following WWI, even though the were the defeated. However, the allies failed to 'check' the German power and thus the German empire was allowed to prosper which later resulted in WWII. Arguably, the British empire was the only monarchy empire that survived WWI, and it was greatly diminished.
