If the word,"if," in math mean multiply and,"is," means equal, what does the word,"was'" mean???
EX: Four times a number was 22 greater than twice the number.

4x = 2x + 22 is what those words indicate. I don't think "if" necessarily means multiply.
I think that was a typo for "of", as in 20% of 50 is 10
As for "was" it usually arises when describing a quantity which has changed for some reason, as in
A was half as old as B 5 years ago. Now he's 10 years younger. How old are A and B?
