I think you are describing the method of elimination
1st equation -----> 2x-3y = 1
2nd times 2 -----> 2x + 4y = 8
subtract them
-7y = -7
y = 1
back into the 2nd:
x + 2 = 4
x = 2
x = 2, y = 1
1st equation -----> 2x-3y = 1
2nd times 2 -----> 2x + 4y = 8
subtract them
-7y = -7
y = 1
back into the 2nd:
x + 2 = 4
x = 2
x = 2, y = 1
