a + 6 b = 14

- a - 2 b = - 2

---------------

6 b - 2 b = 14 - 2

4 b = 12 Divide both sides by 4

b = 12 / 4

b = 3

a + 6 b = 14

a + 6 * 3 = 14

a + 18 = 14

a = 14 - 18

a = - 4
