The British and French wanted U.S. units sed to reinfore their troops already on the battle lines. Who was the general chosen to command the American Expeditionary Force in World War I that refused to break up U.S. units so that they could be used as reinforcements for British and French units? Pershing retired with the rank/title of "General of the Armies".
