Do one step at a time. First, take the 1/5 that is sawn off.
1 - 1/5 is the same as 5/5 - 1/5 = 4/5.
Next, you have to take the 3/8 away from this. Remember when adding or subtracting fractions, you must have a common denominator...in this case, it will be 40.
4/5 - 3/8 or 32/40 - 15/40 = ?
