the sum of two numbers is 90.three times the larger decreased by twice the smaller is 160.what are the numbers?

one number is x, the other 90-x. Let x be the larger.

3x - 2(90-x) = 160
3x - 180 + 2x = 160
5x = 340
x = 68

so, the two numbers are 68 and 22

Check:
3*68 - 2*22 = 204-44 = 160
