I'm finding it hard to find evidence that the growth of the internet has had a positive effect on businesses and organisations.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't it depend on the business? Microsoft, Sun, HR Block, Google, Yahoo, et al, have benefitted. What about banks? What about online stock brokers?
Mom and POp hardware stores probably as a group have not benefitted.

It was aimed at the normal shop type business. IE : Have a game store move online, making more profits and having a greater target audience.
I'm just having a hard time finding the evidence to back this up.
Many Thanks for the help.

One obvious bit of evidence is the actual presence of e-commerce. Retailers, etc. would not bother with e-commerce (at least in any serious way) unless e-commerce were profitable.
That said, here is a link to a department of commerce study on the growing size of e-commerce.
