How do I discover which data set in a problem is more spread out?
Do I look at the numbers, or do I look at a histogram or any other type of graph?

looking at the numbers will give you the range. If by "spread out" you mean greatest range, that should do it.
If you mean a more even distribution, then bar charts would probably give a better idea. You could see clumping and outliers, etc.
