You are thinking too hard.
If mixing pigments, magenta plus yellow absorbs all colors except red, so it appears red.
I recently had a lot of fun repainting my beehives (after 30 years of faded yellow). I went to Sherwin Williams, bought a gallon of white, and then bought 3oz of blue, magneta, and gold (yellow fades). Want red? for me it was magneta + "gold".
Because I mixed a cup of paint at a time, I have many, many colorful beehives.
