What are the easiest ways to visualize the shape of molecules with ionic bonds?

Shape? I think of NaCl as a Na ion staring at a chloride ion. or two Na ions staring at a sulfate ion. Those are in solution.
For solids, the ions exist in a layered structure with one of the crystal types; i.e., body centered cubic, etc.
