I think probably you are supposed to get +y alone on the left
first add -3x to both sides
-3x + 3x - y = -3x + 12
or
-y = -3x + 12
but we want +y, not - y
So multiply every term on both sides by -1
(-1)(-y) = (-1)(-3x) + (-1)(12)
or
y = 3x - 12
