Given that today is Thurs., Dec. 29th, 2011, will any parts of the postal system be running or not in the next few days? Does the federal government observe New Year's weekend as a holiday? Do they have people sorting the mail, delivering the mail, neither, or both?

There are skeleton crews at selected distribution centers. Now working is another question.
Don't count on the mail getting through at all.

Since New Year's Day is a federal holiday and falls on Sunday this year, Monday, January 2nd is a federal holiday.

Check with your post office or mail carrier about what activities the post office does on federal holidays.
