Can someone please simplify this for me, just need a simple definition for St. Louis, ocean liner.

-Over 900 Jewish refugees on board, was refused permission to dock when it appeared off the east coast of Canada. The ship was forced to return to Europe, where many of the passengers died in concentration camps.
