when finding the area to the left of the Z score and Z= 1.43 do i subtract the z score from one or is that only when finding the area to the right of Z

Find table in the back of your statistics text labeled something like "areas under normal distribution" to find the proportion related to the Z score. Since Z is positive, the area to the left will be the larger area. To the right will be the smaller area.
