"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

In my view, the authors of this amendment wanted to be sure that carefully trained and supervised military units could be armed to defend their communities.

The closest to militia that we have today are state and local police forces plus National Guard units.
