I get 36a^15 but I feel this is wrong

You're right about being wrong

6a^8 * 6a^7 = 36a^15
--------------------
But you have (6a)^8 = 6^8* a^8
(6a)^7 = 6^7 * a^7

So the product is 6^15 * a^15
