is force and normal force the same thing? if not what is the difference. for instancee if a problem said given a force of 20 newtons. would normal force be 20 newtons?

A "normal" force is a force, or component of a force, that is perpendicular to the surface upon which it acts.

"Normal" does not mean "usual" or "average" in this case. It means perpendicular.
