Write one topic sentence for your Week Nine essay and explain the primary role of a topic sentence in an effective essay?

My essay will be about "Most Americans should not use credit cards."
The topic sentence I have is "Most Americans should not use credit cards because the way the economy."

Is that a good topic sentence? What is the primary role of a topic sentence in an effective essay?

It is not a good topic sentence because it's incomplete.

Most Americans should not use credit cards because the way the economy is. The economy at this very moment shows that Americans are great at racking uo debt, but fall short when time comes to pay it off.

Is that better?

Yes. Your first sentence is your topic sentence and it is complete. However, you still left a word out.

. . . because OF the way the economy is.

Frankly, I doubt if you can show why our bad economy should support why most Americans shouldn't use credit cards. You might consider a topic sentence more like this:

When my husband and I were beginning teachers and supporting our three children, we used credit cards for necessities like clothing for the kids. We racked up some debt -- but eventually paid it off.

Thank you for your help. If I was to use a topic sentence more like the one you wrote, wouldnt that go back on trying to prove a point on why most Americans should not use credit cards?
I am trying to prove a point on why most Americans should not use credit cards, if I said the debt eventually got paid off, wouldnt that turn back what I had said about credit cards?

How are you going to show that the bad economy affects credit card use? In other words -- what is your support for your thesis?
