there are real solutions when the discriminant is non-negative.
the two equations which must be solved are
x^2-px+5 = 7
x^2-px-2 = 0
so p^2+8 >= 0 ... always true
and
x^2-px+5 = -7
x^2-px+12 = 0
p^2 - 48 >= 0
