What is the meaning of "national psyche"?

Can it be used in a sentence like "This mentality should be erased from our national psyche"?

The term means something like the collective thinking or attitude of a nation as a whole. Obviously, not every single person in a country, especially one as large and diverse as the US, will think exactly alike, but this term is used to indicate the general thinking across the nation.
