well i would substitute 6 for x and 5 for y. then it would be
6/8 + 2/5
0.75 + 0.4
would it then be 1.15?

I suspect your teacher wants fractional answers....exact.

4/8 -1/3= (12-8)/24=4/24= 1/6 which is not even close to your answer.

8) 6/8 + 2/5= (30+16)/40=46/40=23/20
