a man sold an article at a profit of 25%. if he had bought it at 10% less and sold for 10RS more, the gain would have been 40%. find its cost price

S = sale price.
C = cost.
(S - C)/C = 0.25
(rewrite as S = 1.25 C;

(S + 10 -0.9C)/(0.9C) = 0.40

Solve for C

0.35C + 10 = 0.36 C
0.01C = 10
C = 1000 Rupees
