So now I'm thinking a but i think i'll read a little more on the subject as i'm still confused as the fluid intellegence says 'the ability to analyze novel problems, identify patterns and relationships that underpin these problems and the extrapolation of these using logic' and that's what i thought the question required.

You could be right. However, crystallized intelligence is tested on the IQ tests' verbal parts. This question about the cat and dog is a prime example of the verbal part of these tests.
