You can set up a proportion:
2.5 / 5 = x / 1
Solve for x. You'll get less than 1 gallon.
2.5 / 5 = x / 1
Solve for x. You'll get less than 1 gallon.

multiply by the conversion so that the units you do not want cancel
2.5 qt * (1 gal/4 qt) leaves ? gal
You had a qt on the top and a qt on the bottom so the qt units canceled and you are left with gallons
