It ignores the depth of the seat.
If I need to reupholster a couch that is 6 feet long and 54 inches tall and the fabric is 4.99 a yard how much fabric would I need?

the depth of the couch is 12 inches
6 feet = 2 yards
54 inches = 1.5 yards
12 inches = 0.3 yards
(2 * 1.5) + (2 * 0.3) = ?
That gives you the square yards. You still need to know the width of the fabric to know how much to purchase.
