My own opinion is that Grant's greatest problem was getting to Vicksburg at all. He tried all kinds of approaches down the streams on the Mississippi side, then down the west bank until finally floating the fleet past and moving the army downstream and across to Mississippi below Vicksburg, then cutting loose from his supply train and circling around south of Vicksburg to attack Vicksburg from the rear(East) after taking Jackson on the way around.
