(5y-3/9) + (2y-1/2)
7y - 6/18 - 9/18
7y - 15/18
7y = 5/6

You mean simplify?

5y - 3/9 + 2y -1/2 = 7y -1/3 -1/2 = 7y - 2/6 - 3/6 = 7y - 5/6
