Is your problem to see that
h + 7h = 8h ?

What if I said:
"a hat and 7hats"
wouldn't I have 8 hats ?

so

h-6 + 7h = 42
8h -6 = 42
8h -6 +6 = 42+6 , add 6 to both sides
8h = 48
divide both sides by 8
8h/8 = 48/8
h = 6
