to round off, first you need to know the place of the digit you want to round off,, in the problem it's "to the nearest ten". then we look at the number to the right of tens digit
if the number to the right of tens digit is:
*greater than or equal to 5, you add 1 to tens digit
*less than 5, the tens digit does not change
then the rest of the digits to the right of tens becomes zero.
for example, in 27, the ones digit is 7 and it is greater than 5. thus we add 1 to the tens digit and it becomes 30.
therefore, in 53, the ones digit is 3 and it is less than 5. thus the tens digit remains the same, and it becomes 50.
