At first glance I ma inclined to agree with your answer; however, I wonder if it could be correct if we looked at it another way.
We measure the initial T with a thermometer and we measure the final T with a thermometer. The difference in T then is used to calculate q. In that sense we used a thermometer to measure the heat absorbed.
