Le Musee d'Orsay exhibits the birth of modern painting. Opened in 1986, this former train station houses art-works from 1848 to 1914. Impressionism began in Paris in the 1860's when younger painters broke with the academic traditions of the past. Before this time traditional paintings depicted historical or mythological events with stiff, idealized figures.
