first, we convert 1 1/3 and 2 1/4 to mixed fraction:
1 1/3 >>> since this also means 1 + 1/3 and we can rewrite 1 as 3/3, thus 3/3 + 1/3 = 4/3
2 1/4 >>> since this also means 2 + 1/4 and we can rewrite 2 as 8/4, thus 8/4 + 1/4 = 9/4
also 1 1/3 : 2 1/4 = 1 1/3 divided by 2 1/4 or 4/3 divided by 9/4
(4/3) / (9/4)
to do this, we first get the reciprocal of the divisor (the second term or the 9/4) ,, note that reciprocal is just interchanging the numerator and denominator. thus the reciprocal of 9/4 is 4/9 ,, then we now use the operation multiplication instead of division:
(4/3) * (4/9)
to multiply fractions, we just multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator:
(4/3) * (4/9) = (4*4)/(3*9) = 16/27
hope this helps~ :)
