The Mississippi is the core of one of the world's largest drainage systems. It provides transportation for goods.

It is incredibly important corridor through the country north and south but a barrier east and west. In the American Civil War once the Union controlled the river, no food or help could reach the southern states from the west. They pretty much started to starve.
