the floor of a room is a rectangle. it has a perimeter of 22m and an area of 24 square meters.

what are the length and width of the room?

length --- x
width --- y

x+y = 11 or y = 11-x

xy = 24
x(11-x) = 24
x^2 - 11x + 24 = 0
(x-3)(x-8) = 0
x = 3 or x = 8

if x=3, y = 8
if x = 8, y = 3

the room is 3 by 8

Perimeter = 2 times length plus 2 times width

the room is 3 metres by 8 metres

check : 3+8 + 3+8 = 22
3x8 = 24
