Hund's rule states that each orbital in a sublevel will contain one electron before another electron will fill an orbital? Why?

The answer I always got was that it takes energy to make the electrons pair because they are of opposite spin. Thus it is easier for them to go into a degenerate orbital (same energy level) where there is no opposing force.
