It has five valence electrons because it is in group 5A. Each group, or family, has the same number of valence electrons. The group beginning with H has 1, Be - 2, B - 3, C - 4, N - 5, O - 6, F - 7, and He - 8. (If you look at your periodic table, you should see the pattern.)
