Is the smallest country in Africa Equatorial Guinea? Or could it possibly be Djibouti?

Here is another hint i got..It's 186 to 155 miles off the north west coast of Gabon...

The only problem is that Mayotte is not off the northwest coast of Gabon. Mayotte is a dependency of France -- so may not be considered a country.

It looks like Sao Tome is the right answer.
